One of the major reasons why food manufacturers periodically carry out food testing and water testing is because it is a regulatory requirement. Since food regulations have been created to protect the health and safety of consumers food manufacturers get food samples tested from time to time. So unless the food is in compliance with regulations it is not considered to be safe for consumers. Periodic testing of food and water is also carried out as these test reports are required during food inspections.
Food testing also builds confidence in the food manufacturers as it assures them that they are offering quality food which is in compliance and totally safe for human consumption. In the same way water testing is important as water is used in the manufacturing process of food products. Samples of food products are sent to accredited food labs for testing as these labs are fully equipped to scientifically analyse and identify any problems in the food product that is being tested. Food testing and water testing is an indication of the transparency in the manufacturing process which conveys to consumers that the food and the water has been tested and so are safe.
New product development
A number of food labs also carry out food testing because it is required for research and development of a new food or beverage product. Tests are carried to check the choice of ingredients, additives, colours, flavours and shelf life. Food labs also test the new product to check if the contaminants and residues are within regulation permitted levels. In order to provide quality foods, responsible food manufacturers, carry out food and water testing and also because it is required by FSSAI for new product approval.
Food is tested to analyse the value of the nutritional content of a food product. This kind of testing is important as it provides the correct information for labelling requirements. Since nutritional labelling is an important regulation for food products the values of the nutrients have to be exact.
Food allergen testing is an increasing need as food allergies are growing worldwide. Food testing is required when the food is being targeted for a particular allergen. The most common allergens that are targeted for detection are glutens, peanuts, eggs, nuts milk and soybeans. The food ingredients, as well as the finished food products are tested to rule out the entry of allergens during the process of food manufacturing or anywhere in the food chain.
NABL certified food labs
Food labs that are NABL certified have the appropriate technical expertise in food analysis and so their test reports are authentic. The test methods are standardised and carried out using the latest equipment. Food labs are accredited to test several types of things like pesticides in foods and vegetables. They also test the extent of contaminants in water, including heavy metal contamination. This is important as water is an important ingredient used in food production.
