Perhaps you never liked your grandmother’s house and bathroom, but you have to admit she had a style of her own. Today, many people look back in past to find inspiration in timeless pieces of furniture and furnishings in hopes to bring some of that long-past times back. Vintage chic is a style that is ever present in decoration and even in fashion, and for those who are dreaming of having their own piece of vintage heaven in bathroom here are a few simple and easy tips.
Bathroom cabinets and pedestal sinks are something you seldom stop to think about and they don’t seem particularly stylish in the end. However, that can be changed in an instant with magical vintage style to enhance the beauty of the place. You can easily repurpose your ugly old furniture to be used as a bathroom vanity. Undermount basins are placed underneath the countertop and the top of the cabinet will have to be cut in the shape of the basin, but it will be incredibly easy to clean and you will get a beautiful piece of old furniture in your bathroom which will also be handy for storage.
Do you think that people loved washed out, thin towels? Of course not; they enjoyed quality materials and softness which only the best quality cotton could bring them. If you are going to have a vintage bathroom, why stop at decorating the place? Change your linen too, and choose wonderfully thick cotton towels which will feel line and soft against your skin, and shower curtains can have elegant lace sewn at the top or bottom to make the place look even more Victorian. Not only will these look and feel good, they will last longer too because of the quality of the material used.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Plain mirrors with plastic frames simply cannot do in a vintage-style bathroom. You don’t have to go out of your way to shop for heavy mirrors in gilded frames. You can choose a simpler solution, a mirror even without a frame which can be attached to the wall with silicone and strong glue, but which has been cut in a beautiful intricate way. Or you can even take it a step further and bring in a big old mounted mirror and use a can of silver spray colour to dye it yourself. However, bringing in a mirror with wooden frame is not recommendable since steam and moisture can permanently damage the wood and cause it to rot. Opt for metal or plastic instead, but choose such frames which will go well with the rest of the decorations.
Showers simply won’t do, can you imagine walls of glass and plenty of plastic in your beautiful bathroom? Of course not! This is why choosing the right tub is so important, it will transform the place completely. Porcelain or even plain copper tub will make you bathroom look like it was transferred from Victorian era. However, it would be wise to check the plumbing first before you bring the tub in and install lit. You wouldn’t want broken pipes and water leaking all over the place after all the effort you put into decorating, would you?
Details that matter
Last but not least, you should consider adding a little something to your bathroom to make it even more appealing. It can be as simple as a piece of beautifully coloured wallpapers which can cover the wall behind the mirror, or brass pots in which you can keep fresh flowers (they will love the moisture and steam from your baths and will grow wonderfully). Next, you can choose to keep your toothbrushes in metal cans or even gilded mason jars. It will look rustic and vintage but incredibly chic at the same time.
While it may be strange seeing pieces of heavy old furniture in the bathroom, a few strategically placed items will do wonders in changing the atmosphere of the place. It may be difficult at first, but if you are creative and innovative you will always find new ways to implement some of the spirit of the past times in your life, bathroom included. It doesn’t have to be costly and complicated, you just have to be willing to experiment and compromise and the results will be great.
